Flagstone, Patio Stone & Pavers: Which to Use for a Central Texas Patio or Path

Mexican Rosewood Patio, a red-brown Mexican flagstone, at Round Rock Landscape Supplies™ in Leander TX

Flagstone, patio stone, and pavers all build the same things: patios, walkways, pool decks, and stepping stone paths. The difference is in the look, the thickness, and how each one is sold.

This guide covers what we stock at our Leander yard, which thickness fits a dry-set install versus a mortared one, how to estimate tons or pallets, and what goes underneath so the surface stays flat. Pickup and delivery are available to Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Liberty Hill, Austin, and the surrounding area.

What Each Term Means

Flagstone and patio stone are the same thing in Central Texas. Both refer to flat, irregular pieces of natural sandstone or limestone sold by the ton. The pieces come in random shapes and get fitted together on site.

Pavers are manufactured concrete units in set shapes and sizes. They are sold by the piece or pallet and lay in repeating patterns with tight joints.

Slabs are natural stone sawn into rectangles, like a 2' x 4' limestone or cantera slab. They give a clean, modern line with fewer joints. Our limestone guide covers limestone and Lueders slabs in more detail.

Stand-up stone is patio stone with a vertical face for walls, borders, and raised bed edges. It is sold by the whole pallet only.

Which Thickness You Need

The thickness decides how the stone gets installed. Thin stone needs mortar. Thick stone can be set loose on a compacted base.

  • 1" to 1½" (Silver Mist Oklahoma, Mexican Brown, 1" Sansaba) - mortar it onto a concrete slab. Thin flagstone cracks when it is set loose on gravel and walked on.
  • 1¾" to 2" (Oklahoma, Austin Limestone, 2" Sansaba, Mexican Grey) - dry-set on a compacted base or mortared. This is the standard thickness for a backyard patio.
  • 1½" to 2" (Mexican Rustic, Black, Rosewood, White) - these pallets arrive in mixed thicknesses. On a dry-set job, mortar the pieces under 1¾" or keep them for low-traffic spots, and set the thicker pieces where people walk.
  • 2¼" slabs - heavy-duty surfaces, large steps, and high-traffic entries.
  • 60mm concrete pavers - the standard for patios and walkways set on a compacted base with sand-filled joints.

How Much You Need

Patio stone is sold by the ton, and coverage depends on thickness. These are planning numbers. We confirm tonnage when you order.

ThicknessApproximate coverage per ton
1"120 to 140 sq ft
1½"90 to 110 sq ft
2"70 to 90 sq ft

Add 10 to 15 percent for cutting and fitting irregular pieces. A tight-fit patio wastes more stone than one with wide joints.

Pavers and slabs are easier to figure. Multiply length by width in feet for square footage and we will convert that to pieces or pallets. A 12' x 16' patio is 192 square feet. With 24" x 24" Holland pavers at 4 square feet each, that is 48 pieces plus a few extra for cuts.

For the base material under the stone, use our coverage calculator to get cubic yards of road base and decomposed granite.

Base, Setting Bed, and Joints

Most patios that fail do so because of the base, not the stone. Central Texas clay swells and shrinks with the weather. A compacted base keeps the surface from heaving.

For a dry-set patio or walkway:

  1. Excavate deep enough for 4 inches of base, 1 inch of setting bed, and the stone.
  2. Compact 4 inches of Limestone Road Base 1¾" Minus in two lifts with a plate compactor.
  3. Spread a 1 inch setting bed of Decomposed Granite ¼" Minus or Limestone Road Base Screenings and screed it flat.
  4. Set the stone, tap it level, and keep a slight slope away from the house for drainage.
  5. Fill flagstone joints with decomposed granite for a natural look. Use Polymeric Sand for pavers and tight-joint flagstone so the joints lock and resist weeds.
  6. Hold the outside edge with 14 gauge steel edging so the pavers do not spread.

For a mortared patio, set the stone in a mortar bed on a concrete slab. We carry Portland, Type S, and white cements for the bed and joints, plus Gator Seal and stone cleaners for finishing. All of it is on our cement and supplies page.

Road base and decomposed granite are sold by the yard. Our decomposed granite guide covers DG in more depth.

Stepping Stones and Paths

Stepping stones are the quickest patio stone project. Pick large 2" flagstone pieces for a natural path or the 18" Premium Round Paver for a uniform one.

Space the stones 20 to 24 inches center to center so a normal stride lands on stone. Set each one on 2 inches of compacted decomposed granite with the top flush with the grade. That way a mower passes over without catching an edge.

Fill between the stones with pea gravel, decomposed granite, or sod. Pea gravel and DG are both on our gravel and river rock page.

Pickup and Delivery

Patio stone, pavers, and slabs ship on pallets by flatbed. Same-day or next-day delivery is often available across our service area. We deliver to driveways only, so clear the driveway before the truck arrives.

Pickup is at our yard at 600 N Bagdad Rd in Leander during business hours (Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm, Saturday 8:00am – 12:00pm, closed Sunday). A pallet of patio stone weighs well over a ton, so check your trailer rating before you come.

We deliver to Leander, Cedar Park, Round Rock, Georgetown, Liberty Hill, Austin, and the surrounding area. Delivery is quoted per order by distance and truck type. Details are on our delivery page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is flagstone or pavers cheaper?

Pricing is quoted at the time of order and changes with yard stock. Flagstone is priced by the ton and pavers by the piece or pallet. Flagstone usually takes more labor to fit because every piece is a different shape. Pavers go down faster.

Can I lay flagstone on decomposed granite without mortar?

Yes, as long as the stone is 1¾" or thicker and the DG sits on a compacted road base. Stone that is 1" to 1½" thick needs to be mortared on a slab.

What goes between flagstone joints?

Decomposed granite for a natural look with wider joints. Polymeric Sand for tight joints that lock in place and keep weeds out.

Do you sell paver base?

Yes. Limestone Road Base 1¾" Minus is the base layer and Decomposed Granite ¼" Minus or Limestone Road Base Screenings is the setting bed. Both are sold by the yard.

Which patio stone stays coolest in summer?

Lighter colors stay cooler underfoot. Mexican White, Mexican Cream, and Austin Limestone are the usual picks for pool decks. Mexican Black and the Midnight Holland paver run hotter in direct sun.
