Landscape Boulders: Sizes, Types & How Many You Need

Landscape boulders for sale at Round Rock Landscape Supplies in Leander TX

Boulders are one of the fastest ways to give a yard structure. A few placed right can anchor a bed, break up a slope, or create a focal point without the cost of hardscaping. But boulders are also easy to get wrong, wrong size, wrong quantity, or a delivery truck that can't get them where you need them. This guide walks through what's actually available and how to plan your order.

Boulder Types We Carry

We stock 10 boulder types, most sold by the ton. Availability shifts with what's in the yard. For current pricing, check the Stone Boulders page or give us a call.

Which Boulder Fits Your Project

  • For a natural, blends-into-the-yard look: Limestone Boulders (Fieldstone or Honeycomb) are the closest match to native Central Texas stone and work in nearly any yard.
  • For a bold, dramatic accent: Black Diamond Boulders stand out as single focal points or paired with lighter gravel and stone.
  • For a Hill Country, aged look: Sansaba Moss Boulders bring natural moss texture and read as though they've been there for years, good for shaded beds and established-looking landscapes.
  • For large-scale features or slope work: Oklahoma Boulders run up to 30" and are the largest single-piece option in stock, suited to major focal points or retaining applications.
  • For color and character: Key Lime and Dino Eggs Boulders add a distinct look for accent groupings and smaller features.

Understanding Sizes and Weight

Most of what we carry falls in the 6"–12" range, with Oklahoma Boulders running larger (12"–30") and several types offered as "various sizes" pulled from the yard. As a rough guide, boulder weight runs 150-plus pounds per cubic foot depending on stone type, which is why boulders are priced and sold by the ton rather than the cubic yard.

A single 12" boulder typically weighs 50–100 pounds and can usually be placed by hand. Anything approaching the 24"–30" range (like the larger end of Oklahoma Boulders) can weigh several hundred pounds and will need equipment to place safely.

How Many Do You Need?

This depends on the project:

  • Accent groupings: Odd numbers (3 or 5) in mixed sizes look more natural than matched pairs. A typical bed accent grouping runs 3–5 boulders in the 6"–12" range, roughly 150–400 lbs total depending on type.
  • Border or edging: Plan on one boulder per 1.5–2 feet of border for a continuous look, spaced further apart for a scattered, casual edge.
  • Focal points or larger features: One or two larger boulders (Oklahoma Boulders in the upper size range) often do more visual work than a large cluster of smaller ones.

Since most of our stock is sold by the ton and pricing varies by type, the easiest way to plan a budget is to tell us the look you're going for and the area you're covering, we can help estimate tonnage before you order.

Delivery and Placement

We deliver across Leander, Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, and Georgetown. A few things to know before ordering boulders specifically:

  • We only deliver to driveways, and the driveway needs to be clear for delivery.
  • Larger or heavier boulders may need equipment to place. Let us know your selection ahead of time so we can plan the right truck.
  • All stone is a natural material and will vary in color, size, and texture piece to piece, that's part of the look.
  • All sales are final, no refunds or exchanges, so it's worth confirming type and quantity with us before ordering.

See our delivery page for full details on trucks, fees, and service areas.
